Claire could hardly contain her excitement as her family's horse-drawn buggy approached the grand ship. The door was opened for her and she stepped out into the fresh, sea air with a gentle breeze blowing past her. She smiled brightly as her father and mother also got out of the carriage. She turned to them, happy as a lark, though she was saddened by the tear she saw rolled down her mother's cheek.
"Mother, I shall write every single day when I am in America, maybe even twice a day if you wish it. But there is nothing to worry about, I can assure you," Claire said, taking her mother's hands in her own. Too sad and weak to say anything, her mother merely nodded and smiled. Then she embraced her daughter in a hug and kissed her on both cheeks. Then Claire turne dto her father, who wore a smile on his face that showed her was proud of his daughter.
"Well, I can see my little girl is off to the new world," he said with a smart laugh. "You take care of yourself, dear. And be sure to marry a nice man," he said with a wink.
"Daddy..." Claire said, trying to sound a bit embarrassed. But she then hugged her father tighly as he kissed her on her foredhead and then she return the gesture with a kiss on his cheek. "I'll miss you, father," she added before someone came to help her on board. She smiled at her parents and then followed the man to the ship where he helped her on board and she made her way up to the top deck.
With a hand on her hat to keep it from blowing off, Claire waved to her parents. Once they saw her, she saw her mother waving a hankerchief and her father blowing kisses. She smiled and looked behind her at the open sea. All around her were other passengers, they varied from 1st to 3rd class, and were easily distinguished by their dress. While Claire wore a simple, pencil skirt, suit jacket and wide-brim hat, the woman and child next to her wore only simple dresses and no hat at all. This was certainly the Ship of Dreams for many.
