Dedrick watched as the passengers made their way onboard the Titanic. He saw their excited faces, their smiles. The kids running about and their parents trying to keep an eye on them. Never had the harbour been this busy. But then again, the maiden voyage of such a luxurious ship didn't happen every day either.
He looked down on himself and the White Star Line uniform he was wearing. This had a jump in class for him as well. In his mind this was the finest uniform he had ever worn. He could hardly believe in his own luck when he had been hired.
Deena stepped out of the carriage and gazed upon the ship... The Titanic.
She was as pretty as they had said and far larger. The young woman smiled at the sight. The chance to see an unknown part of the world... It almost made her dizzy with excitement.
There was a shadow side to her reason for leaving though... She was devastated after her fiancee left her. She never even knew why he left.
One day he was just gone. Doing unexpected things wasn't unlike him, but this...
Several people passed by her, everyone eager to board the ship, and soon enough Deena was smitten by their mood. She got her luggage, careful not to trip in her long and slightly old-fashioned dress, and walked toward the gangway. Originally she had planned to wear one of her new outfits, but as she was leaving so much else behind she figured she would would wear her best of what she had from before instead. Her fair hair was adorned and a lock fell gently over shoulder.
Heavens, did she feel like a child again!
Lost among all the strangers...
Tears blinked in her green eyes as she watched some other passengers saying farewell to their families. With a swift movement she raised her hand to dry her eyes, then changed her mind and let it be. After all, this was a big change for her. A day like this would come only once in a lifetime!
Then came the boarding call for Second Class passengers. This is it, she told herself. Goodbye to Britain! She was almost tempted to run the last meters.
Of course, she had class enough not to do it but she did hurry to the deck to wave goodbye. Although she had already said goodbye to her near and dear ones she wanted to be there with the others waving in case someone she knew were at the harbour.
As the last trace of Southhampton faded from view she whispered;
"Goodbye mother. Goodbye father. Goodbye..."
